1. The study script
You will work through study modules in the area of general management, provided via the university’s advanced e-learning environment. This script covers a wide range of subfields within business administration, equipping you with essential knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in management. The content is designed to provide both theoretical insights and practical applications, allowing you to develop a strong foundation in various aspects of business. Throughout the course, you will be required to answer a series of open-ended questions, encouraging critical thinking and the application of your understanding to real-world business scenarios. Each part contains a number of tasks that must be answered in free writing with at least half a page for each task.
The study modules include the following content:
1. Managerial Economics
The study module Managerial Economics is designed to equip students with the knowledge and tools needed to apply economic principles in managerial decision-making. The course focuses on bridging the gap between theoretical economics and practical business applications, helping students understand how economic insights can be leveraged to solve complex business problems.
A key component of the module is demand analysis and forecasting, where students learn about the factors that influence demand and how to measure elasticity.
Another important area is production and cost analysis, which delves into the relationship between inputs and outputs in the production process.
The module also examines market structures and competitive strategy, covering the characteristics of various market types such as perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly.
In addition, the module explores the influence of macroeconomic factors on managerial decisions. Students gain an understanding of key economic indicators like GDP, inflation, and interest rates, as well as fiscal and monetary policies. The module emphasizes how these factors affect the business environment and international operations, including the impact of exchange rates and trade policies.
2. Strategic Management
The study module Strategic Management focuses on the processes and frameworks that organizations use to develop, implement, and evaluate strategies aimed at achieving long-term objectives. It provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to analyze competitive environments, formulate strategic plans, and ensure organizational success in dynamic and complex markets.
The module begins with an exploration of strategic analysis, where students learn to assess both the internal and external environments of an organization. Topics include tools such as SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats).
A critical component of the module is strategy implementation, which examines how strategic plans are translated into actionable steps within an organization. Topics include change management, resource allocation, leadership roles in strategy execution, and the alignment of organizational structure with strategic goals.
The module also addresses strategic evaluation and control, teaching students how to measure and monitor the performance of implemented strategies. Students learn to use key performance indicators (KPIs), balanced scorecards, and other evaluation tools to assess whether strategic objectives are being met and to identify areas for improvement.
3. Managerial Competencies
The study module Managerial Competencies focuses on developing the essential skills and abilities required for effective leadership and management in diverse organizational contexts. It is designed to enhance both the technical and interpersonal skills of aspiring managers, ensuring they can navigate complex workplace challenges and lead teams toward achieving organizational goals.
The module begins with an introduction to core managerial skills, such as decision-making, problem-solving, and time management. Students learn frameworks and techniques to analyze situations, prioritize tasks, and make informed decisions under pressure. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and the ability to evaluate alternatives in dynamic environments.
Another key focus is on communication skills, including both verbal and non-verbal communication.
The module also addresses team leadership and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of building and leading high-performing teams. Students learn how to motivate team members, delegate tasks effectively, and manage diversity within a team.
Strategic thinking and planning is another important area covered in the module. Students are introduced to tools and methods for setting organizational objectives, aligning resources with goals, and creating actionable plans to achieve long-term success.
By the end of the module, students will have developed a comprehensive set of managerial competencies, enabling them to lead effectively, communicate clearly, and make strategic decisions that drive organizational success. This module prepares students to excel as confident and adaptable managers in today’s dynamic business landscape.
